As important as the words are that we speak, the pausing in between those words is equally as important to create impactful moments.
Impromptu Speaking Situations: Segment from The World's First Podcast
I was recently on The World’s First Podcast with Erin and Sara Foster. We talked about how to be confident in your own voice and many topics relating to public speaking including social anxiety and the difficulty that many people have when speaking or trying to making conversation in impromptu situations.
This is a big and important topic.
What happens when you run into a friend or acquaintance or colleague and they begin a conversation and you go to speak and literally your mind goes blank and you have nothing to say? What do you do when the words don’t come out of your mouth and you're standing there - wanting to make conversation but have nothing to say? This feeling only adds to the anxiety.
In the podcast I share a solution around how to make conversation in impromptu speaking situations and encourage you to share this with anyone you know who might get social anxiety that impacts their conversational skills.
I always encourage preparing ahead of time for any speaking situation. Guess what? There’s a way that we can prepare ahead of time for impromptu speaking situations! The solution that I offer will build calm, confidence and conversation.

How to sound more dynamic when speaking on the phone
Feeling tired, but you have a business meeting in a few minutes?
Concerned that your fatigue might effect the meeting outcome?
If your meeting is over the phone, and you’re feeling tired - this will help you to sound more dynamic:
1. Stand for the meeting (while speaking)
2. Hold your phone at a distance of 5-6 inches and at an upward angle. Your voice will ‘reach’ (energized) as you speak
If notes are needed for the meeting:
1. Instead of holding them or putting them on a desk (looking down at the notes) simply tape them to the wall or hold them up at an angle. Your voice will project up and outward and this adds enthusiasm to your words.
These techniques build vocal energy and speaking confidence.
