A Quick Way to Organize Your Thoughts

Could you imagine going on a long drive to a new place without any directions?

You might take several wrong turns, end up in the wrong place or possibly have to reroute yourself. Chances are that you might have some hesitation because you're not 100% certain of your directions. Agree?

Speaking also benefits from the use of a map - but a different kind. Our success relies heavily on having a clear plan and knowing the points you want to cover.

If you ever feel that you get lost in your thoughts and words when speaking, try this speaking outline for clarity in your direction:

1. Write out a strong (deliberate) opening sentence
2. Write out a strong (deliberate) closing line(s)

Opening line: (one sentence)
Closing line(s): (two to three sentences)

Leading with a good sentence is your starting point and gives you direction. This opening builds certainty and confidence. Same, too, with the closing lines.

Next, write out the key points that need to be covered:

Point 1: (two sentences)
Point 2: (two sentences)
Point 3: (two sentences)

(add in examples to help make your point)

Here’s the final outline:

Opening line of one sentence, then:
Point 1:
Point 2:
Point 3:
Closing line(s): two to three sentences.

That's it! These 10 lines will visually organize the route you will take when speaking.
