Often when working with a new client I introduce storytelling. This is a simple process where we share/speak stories and then build on the delivery through coaching, techniques and repetition.
I compare my work to that of a verbal gym. In a regular gym, if you were trying to strengthen your biceps, you would do a series of exercises and weights and training that will lead to your goal - stronger arms. Same, too in my work - in a ‘verbal gym’ there are a series of exercises, coaching and techniques that build skill - here it’s that of being a strong and confident speaker.
Why do I find storytelling so powerful?
1. Stories work. I’ve transformed the speaking skills of many, many people over the years from that of anxiety and public speaking fear into confident speakers with presence speaking in front of audiences of ten to thousands.
2. Stories engage the senses and make us feel happy. They build listening skills.
3. Stories are visual. We process visuals something like 60,000 times faster than text.
4. Stories connect people. We can relate to them. We like to share stories. They become participatory and create engagement. Engagement is good.
5. Stories are a way to share our experiences with others in a compelling way. They also demonstrate a point that holds meaning for us. When something holds meaning for the speaker, the delivery becomes much easier.
6. Getting rid of speaking anxiety is a process. Much like the process of building strength in a gym, building skill as a speaker has certain steps. Usually in six sessions I establish a new level of speaking confidence for my clients and we build up from there.
I love this work because it is a game changer for people. The ability to share thoughts and ideas with ease vs. anxiety and hesitation opens up new possibilities and builds extraordinary levels of confidence. And that makes us feel great.
