Inflection adds texture and excitement to the spoken word. It breaks up long sentences and reinvigorates the listener.
This is an easy exercise to help build inflection:
Select a sentence. Here’s one: "The meeting is scheduled for next Friday."
Now, say the sentence,"lifting" only one word at a time (see capitalized words below), letting the other words sound flat and monotonous.
THE meeting is scheduled for next Friday
The MEETING is scheduled for next Friday
The meeting IS scheduled for next Friday
The meeting is SCHEDULED for next Friday
The meeting is scheduled FOR next Friday
The meeting is scheduled for NEXT Friday
The meeting is schedule for next FRIDAY
Do you see how "lifting" a word makes the sentence sound more interesting?
Inflection is fun to use and builds listener engagement.
